Lauderdale County, Tennessee was organized in 1836 and named for Colonel James Lauderdale, who was killed in the Battle of New Orleans in 1812 . It is located on the western border of Tennessee. The county is bordered on the north by Dyer County, on the east by Crockett and Haywood Counties, on the south by Tipton County and on the west by the Mississippi River. It was from Key Corner in Lauderdale County that Henry Rutherford began in 1785 his pioneer survey of the Western District of what was then North Carolina.

The county encompasses 305,408 acres of which 294,095 acres are in crops, pasture, or timber (89,000 acres) . Lauderdale County is home to two federal wildlife refuges, one state waterfowl reguge, and one state historical area - Fort Pillow State Park, site of a Civil War Battle.

There are four incorporated areas: Ripley (County seat), Gates, Halls, and Henning. The county population is approximately 24,500.

Agriculture is the largest industry with an approximate value of $50 million dollars. A number of manufacturing companies with national and international distribution are located in the county.

Agriculture in Lauderdale County is diverse. Cotton, corn, soybeans, wheat, and grain sorghum are the major field crops. There is also a fairly large tomato acreage to be found. Other crops grown include: rice, bell peppers, small fruits, cabbage, cantaloupe, watermelon, pumpkins, and forages such as alfalfa. Beef cattle are the predominant livestock with swine, horses, dairy cattle, sheep and goats also found here. The average farm size is 380 acres with acreage ranging from 10 to 10000.
